Why Choose Doreo? - MailFoundry

September 1, 2006

“Why should I choose Doreo?” is one of the most common pre-sales questions that we receive. We try our best to explain why Doreo is a better value than a lot of other web hosts (but not necessarly cheaper). Our newly introduced MailFoundry spam appliance is one of those reasons.

MailFoundry is a hardware spam and anti-virus appliance produced by Solinus, Inc.. The fact that it’s a piece of hardware is a great advantage (in our opinion). Here is a simple illustration of how we have MailFoundry deployed

Doreo Hosting -- MailFoundry implementation

From the diagram you can see that e-mail (as well as spam, virus and phishing attempts) first flow into the MailFoundry appliance. Filtering techniques are then applied and the legitimate e-mail is delivered to your mailbox. This deployment has several advantages:

  • All rules and filters are applied at one central location
  • The filtering is applied before the mail is delivered lowering the overall server load

Doreo is currently using three levels of mail filter. The first level are Real Time Black Lists (RBL’s). RBL are lists of IP address of know spammers. Doreo is currently using three RBL’s:

  • dnsbl.sorbs.net
  • sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org
  • bl.spamcop.net

Any messages blocked by RBL’s are placed in the quarantine (more information on the quarantine to follow). The second level of filter is anti-virus filtering. Any message identified as containing a virus are reject. The final level of filter is spam filter. The spam filters within MailFoundry are not rule based. There are “spam editors” at Solinus that update the filters 24×7x365. Our MailFoundry downloads these updates as frequently as every 10 minutes.

The “quarantine” is the safety net in the MailFoundry system. The quarantine holds any messages there were flagged by a RBL or spam filter for 7 days. On daily basis (if an email is added to your quarantine) you will receive a quarantine email. Here we can look at a sample quarantine email.

Doreo Hosting -- Sample quarantine email

The quarantine email may have one or two section. The first section (labeled Junk) contains the messages that were flagged by the spam filters. You have options to view the message, release the message or release the message and report it (to Solinus) that it was not really spam. The second section (labeled General) contains the messages that were blocked by the RBL’s. These messages only have a view and release option (as Solinus has no control over the RBL’s). If you choose to do nothing with the email is will simply be purged from the quarantine after 7 days.

The actual quarantine email is delivered to the address where the message was sent. In other words if you have 3 mailboxes on your domain (sales@, support@ and info@) any mail for sales that is quarantined will be sent to sales@ while mail quarantine for support@ will delivered to support@

Like any mail filtering solution MailFoundry is not perfect. If you are having issues with legitimate email being marked as spam, need your quarantines delivered hourly instead of daily or any other issues, please open a support ticket.
