Installing WordPress with Fantastico

April 13, 2007

We receive a lot of requests to install WordPress for clients because they think it’s too hard to install. WordPress is actually quite easy to install with Fantastico (our script installer) . This tutorial will show you how to easily install WordPress.

Choose FantasticoThe first step is really easy. Just log into cPanel (http://www.yourdomain.tld/cpanel/) and choose Fantastico under “Scripts and Programs”

Select WordPressThe second step is just as easy. Simply locate WordPress in the list of scripts and click on it.

WordPress new install Believe it or not, the third step is just as easy. Simply choose “New Install” to (you guessed it) install a new copy of WordPress. One important note here. If you had already installed WordPress (via Fantastico) they would be listed on the bottom of this web page. If your installation was not running the current version there would be a link to upgrade. All you would have to do is click the upgrade link and Fantastico will backup your current installation and upgrade it.

WordPress installation optionsThe fourth step is the only slightly complicated step in the installation (because you’ll actually have to type something here). The first set of options is where you want WordPress installed. From the drop-down list you can choose to install WordPress in your main domain (bobsblog.com in this example) or if you have any sub-domains defined they will be in the list also (some people prefer blog.bobsblog.com instead of www.bobsblog.com). You also have the option to install WordPress in a directory/folder. If you would like WordPress to come up as soon as someone goes to www.bobsblog.com simply leave the “install in directory” blank.

The next set of options are for the setup of your administrative user. Simply choose a user-id and a (good) password. This user-id and password is only for administering WordPress and has nothing to do with your cPanel/ftp/mail user-id’s and passwords.

Next, we will fill in the general information about your blog. Admin Nickname is simply the way that the administrator will display. As an example, you administrator user-id may be “admin” and the nickname “Administrator”. If “admin” writes a post on your blog the author name will say “Administrator” (the nickname). Enter any valid email address in “Admin e-mail”. WordPress (depending on how you configure things) will email this address when, for example, someone posts a comment. “Site name” is simply the name of your blog and “Site Description” is a short description or tag line for your blog. Many WordPress themes will use these to items in the blog header.

The final set of options are rarely used but must be entered. Leave all the options as they default and simply enter your email password for the account shown.

This completes all the information that Fantastico needs to create your WordPress blog, so simply press “Install WordPress”.

The final two steps are very easy. Fantastico will next show you a web page to confirm your installation details. If the location information etc. looks correct (it should after following this how-to) simply click “Finish Installation”. You will then receive a final confirmation that WordPress has been install or any error messages if it failed for some reason.

By following these few simply steps you can install WordPress with Fantastico. If you have any questions or simply prefer to have us install WordPress for you simply contact support at support @ doreo.com (remove the spaces.).
